Remember Not to Forget - A Poem

Updated: Aug 2, 2021

Our life has been providing for some incredible opportunities and experiences while bringing some very big challenges for those we care for. This poem reflects what I am learning about this and what to draw upon.

Remember Not to Forget

Pace and presence Pause and flow A constant contradiction To move faster Just go slow

Forgetting and remembering From love back into loss Of clinging a little too tightly Still this swing, It throws me off

I once sought you in that. The rise and fall, the see and saw Only to leap at the zenith Thrilled in weightless wonder Ephemeral awe.

I measured less my stumbles My falling to the ground In fact a successful tumble Had me standing feeling proud

Of what I had attempted Not caring what went wrong That boy he knew that living Meant grazed knees And a regular bruised scone

I've slowed down those wild adventures Tazan in the trees Age brings a chance for grace Fewer bruised hands and bleeding knees

Our trails and tribulations May take on a more serious tone Yet you offer the same lesson In the struggle and in the flow

When I fall back and meet you In an open hearted space The boy within raises up to greet me With a smile upon his face

He tells me he was practicing For this older version of me Remembering for my future When I fall and skin my knees

'This is what happens in life So don't fret it for to long That swing it's always waiting For you to get back on'

So be the pace and presence Be the pause and flow As life picks up speed Remember just go slow

All that you need for is waiting And can be truly met When you recall your life Is for living And you remember Not to forget.
